About this site
The Rio de Janeiro Maru lies in Chuuk Lagoon, Micronesia, one of the Japanese fleet auxiliary vessels sunk during Operation Hailstone in February 1944. The wreck reaches a maximum depth of around 20 metres and is considered a beginner level dive. Its position within Chuuk Lagoon places it among the cluster of World War Two era wrecks that make the lagoon a well known wreck diving destination.
