RMS Rhone

The RMS Rhone lies off Salt Island in the British Virgin Islands, in the Caribbean Sea. A Royal Mail Steam Packet Company ship, it was wrecked by a hurricane in 1867 while at anchor near Tortola, breaking into two main sections that now rest in the channel between Salt Island and Dead Chest Island. The stern lies in shallower water while the bow section rests deeper, with the site reaching a maximum depth of around 25.9 metres and rated an intermediate dive over a wreck bottom. It is one of the best known wreck dives in the Caribbean, popular for its coral growth and swim-throughs, and divers have reported barracuda, lobster, and sea turtles around the structure. The shallower stern suits less experienced divers, while the deeper bow section and occasional current make parts of the site better suited to more advanced divers.
