About this site
The SAS Pietermaritzburg is a scuttled South African Navy minesweeper resting off the Western Cape coast near Simon's Town, in False Bay. It was sunk deliberately in the late 1990s to create an artificial reef and dive attraction in the bay's cold Atlantic-influenced waters. The wreck sits on a sand and wreck bottom with a maximum depth of around 20 metres, and it is rated a beginner dive, making it an approachable option in an area otherwise known for colder, more demanding conditions. The area around Simon's Town is a well known base for wreck and reef diving on this stretch of coast, with several other scuttled vessels nearby.
