Sha'ab Rumi - Precontinent

Sha'ab Rumi is a reef system in the Red Sea off the coast of Sudan, north of Port Sudan, best known for the remains of Jacques Cousteau's Precontinent II underwater habitat experiment from 1963. Divers can still find structures from that project on the sandy floor, including remnants of the fish observation chamber, tool shed and submarine hangar, along with a shark cage, scattered around the site at depths of roughly 12 to 30 metres. The reef itself is a horseshoe-shaped atoll with steep walls and is reached almost exclusively by liveaboard given its remote location in the southern Red Sea. It is often visited alongside sightings of grey reef sharks and, seasonally, hammerheads, and is generally considered suitable for divers with some open-water experience given the depths and offshore conditions.
