About this site
The SS Dixie Arrow was an American tanker torpedoed by a German U-boat in March 1942 while sailing off the coast of North Carolina, an area that saw heavy shipping losses during that period of the Second World War. She now rests on the seabed off Cape Hatteras, in waters often called the Graveyard of the Atlantic due to the concentration of wartime and other shipwrecks along that stretch of coast. The wreck has broken down significantly over the decades and lies in the open Atlantic, well offshore, making it a boat dive reached from ports along the Outer Banks. The site sits at a maximum depth of around 24.4 metres and is rated a beginner dive, though conditions can still shift with weather and season in this exposed offshore location.
