Proteus lies off the North Carolina coast in the waters commonly called the Graveyard of the Atlantic, an area holding shipwrecks accumulated over more than a century of maritime traffic and wartime losses. The site reaches a maximum depth of around 35.1 metres and is rated an intermediate dive. Wrecks in this stretch of the Atlantic are typically reached by boat out of ports along the Outer Banks or nearby coastal towns.
