About this site
The SS Maheno lies on the eastern beach of Fraser Island (K'gari) in Queensland, Australia. A former ocean liner and hospital ship, it was being towed to be scrapped in 1935 when a cyclone broke its tow line and drove it ashore, where it has remained ever since. Unlike most ship wrecks, this one is not really a scuba dive in the conventional sense, as it sits largely exposed on the sand, with a maximum depth of only around 2 metres in the water around it, making it a beginner-level site. Its main draw is the rusted hull itself, accessible to walk around and explore rather than dive deep into.
