About this site
Strytan is a submerged hydrothermal chimney in Eyjafjordur, near Akureyri in northeastern Iceland. It formed from mineral-rich freshwater rising through the seabed and precipitating into a cone-shaped structure, making it one of the few such formations accessible to recreational divers. The top of the cone sits at around 15 metres, with the base reaching the site's recorded maximum of 70 metres, and the water column above it can feel noticeably warmer where the plume rises. Visibility in the fjord is often very good, and the site draws divers for the novelty of a geothermal feature rather than a reef or wreck. Overall the site is rated advanced, reflecting the depth at the base of the cone and the cold Icelandic water.
