Suloide is a wreck lying inshore, about 12 miles from Beaufort Inlet. She was a 338 ft (103 m) by 54 ft Brazilian freighter, built in Germany and renamed several times before taking the name Suloide. On 26 March 1943 she was carrying manganese ore from Trinidad, bound for New York, when she sank after colliding with the hull of the sunken SS Papoose. The US Coast Guard wire dragged the wreck in 1944 because it was judged a navigational hazard.
The wreck lies in about 65 ft (20 m) of water. Because it was wire dragged, it is now a large debris field rather than an intact hull. There is still a distinct outline, with plates and beams scattered over the bottom and prominent boilers. In places the ship remains partially intact, with the windlass and anchors still visible. The debris makes navigation harder than on a standing wreck.
Marine life is varied. Schools of sheepshead and spadefish are common, as are flounder and sea bass. Sand tiger sharks are typically present in large numbers, often swimming higher in the water column as well as on the wreck itself.
Visibility is generally 20 to 50 feet (6 to 15 m), and summer water temperature is 75 to 80 degrees F. The depth makes it a relatively long dive and it suits novice to intermediate divers. As an inshore wreck it is a common second dive, or an alternative first dive when conditions prevent travelling offshore.
