About this site
Tairapa Pass is the main channel connecting the lagoon of Manihi Atoll, in the Society Islands group of French Polynesia, to the open Pacific. Manihi lies northeast of Tahiti and is known for its pearl farms, and the pass cuts through the atoll's reef on its western side, funneling water and marine life between ocean and lagoon as a drift dive. Divers here have reported floral Maori wrasse, Hawaiian convict surgeonfish, Pacific bullethead parrotfish, Pacific sailfin tang, raccoon butterflyfish, and redfin bream moving through the channel with the current.
