About this site

The SS Thistlegorm is a British armed steamship sunk by German bombers in October 1941 while carrying supplies bound for Allied forces in North Africa, and it now rests in the Straits of Gubal off the Sinai coast, usually dived as a day boat or liveaboard trip out of Sharm El Sheikh. The wreck is around 120 metres long and sits upright on a sandy bottom, reaching a maximum depth of about 30 metres, with holds still full of motorcycles, trucks, rifles, and rail cars, plus two locomotives blown clear of the deck by the explosion that sank her. Barracuda, batfish, grouper, lionfish, humphead wrasse, nudibranchs, and snapper are regularly seen around the hull, and divers have also reported fusiliers, jacks, trevally, and scorpionfish here. Current at the site runs strong, a hazard confirmed at the wreck itself, and it is rated an advanced dive given the depth and the strong current together with the penetration options inside the holds.
