Thompson's Reef lies off the Kona coast of the Big Island of Hawaii, in the waters of the Hawaiian Islands chain. This stretch of leeward coastline is characterized by lava rock formations dropping into clear open ocean, typically reached by boat from harbors along the Kona side. Divers here have reported cauliflower coral, hump coral, and rice coral forming the reef structure, along with fish life including dusky surgeonfish, goldring surgeonfish, saddle wrasse, pebbled butterflyfish, and yellow tang.
