Turtle Bay

Turtle Bay is a dive site set within a small bay on a satellite reef situated on the very outer edge of the Great Barrier Reef, approximately 70 km (about 70 miles) from Port Douglas, Australia, within the Agincourt Ribbon Reefs. Its position at the edge of a major gap in the outer reef means strong water flow passes through, making it an unpredictable and productive site. The maximum depth is 12 m, and the bottom type is reef.

The site is best known for its resident green sea turtles, with individual animals regularly encountered here. From October to December, large loggerhead turtles are also known to visit the area. The strong water exchange and exposed location attract a wide range of other marine life: hammerhead sharks, sea snakes, tiger sharks, pelagic fish, and giant clams have all been recorded here, and encounters with other megafauna are common.

Entry is by boat, and the site is accessed via exclusive moorings on the outer reef. Because of its exposed position, Turtle Bay is not suitable when a very large swell is running outside the reef. The site is rated suitable for beginners, with a maximum depth of 12 m, though the strong current and swell exposure mean conditions can change. Visibility is generally great, reflecting its position on the outer reef with high water exchange.
