About this site
U-260 was a German Type VIIC U-boat scuttled by her own crew in March 1945 off the County Cork coast after being damaged by a mine, rather than risk capture. She lies off Courtmacsherry Bay in relatively shallow water, commonly cited in the region of 20 to 30 metres, with the hull remaining largely intact though encrusted after decades on the seabed. Divers visiting the wreck are usually experienced wreck divers from local Cork clubs and charters, given the exposed Atlantic conditions and the navigation needed to find and work the site. It is a site of genuine historical interest as one of the relatively few U-boat wrecks accessible in Irish waters. Divers have also reported common dragonet, edible crab, and spiny starfish among the marine life settled on the hull.
