About this site
U-853 is a German U-boat sunk on May 6, 1945, off Block Island, Rhode Island, one of the last U-boats lost in World War II, depth-charged by US Navy vessels just hours after Germany's surrender was announced. The submarine sits upright on the seabed in roughly 40 to 50 metres of water, largely intact though with a hole in the hull from the fatal attack. It remains a war grave, as the full crew went down with the boat, and divers often note the conning tower and deck gun still visible. It is rated an advanced dive, a grading consistent with the depth, cold water, and current common to this stretch of the Atlantic off Block Island.
