About this site
The USS Aeolus was a Navy cable repair ship sunk deliberately in 1988 off Morehead City, North Carolina as part of an artificial reef program, after earlier service dating back to World War II. It lies broken into sections in the Atlantic off the Outer Banks coast, with a maximum depth around 33.5 metres to the sand. Storms, including Hurricane Fran, further broke up the structure over the years, leaving a scattered but penetrable wreck popular with charters out of Morehead City and Beaufort. Visibility is generally good, and the site is rated an intermediate dive with a wreck bottom throughout. Tiger sharks are a regular sight on the wreck, and divers have also reported barracuda, grouper, and snapper around the structure.
