About this site
USS Serpens was a U.S. Navy cargo ship that exploded while loading ammunition and depth charges off Guadalcanal in January 1945, with the loss of most of those aboard, making it one of the deadliest single incidents for U.S. Coast Guard personnel in the war. The wreck lies in the waters off Guadalcanal Island in Guadalcanal Province, Solomon Islands, in the area used at the time as a supply anchorage. Given the violence of the explosion, the site is understood to be a scattered debris field rather than an intact hull.
