About this site
The USS Spiegel Grove is a former US Navy Landing Ship Dock, roughly 155 metres long, sunk deliberately as an artificial reef off Key Largo in 2002. It capsized during the initial sinking and had to be righted and repositioned by salvage crews before settling upright on the sandy bottom. The wreck reaches a maximum depth of about 40 metres, with the shallowest structures reachable by recreational divers and the deeper holds and stern sections calling for more advanced skills, and it is rated an advanced dive overall with visibility generally described as great. Its size and maze of interior passageways make it a popular wreck for penetration diving, and grouper and barracuda are regular sightings, with bull sharks also confirmed around the structure. Divers have additionally reported angelfish, parrotfish, reef sharks, sea turtles, and stingrays here. Given the depth and the occasional current on this stretch of the Keys reef tract, it remains a site best suited to experienced divers, especially anyone planning to go inside the hull.
