About this site
The Witte Leeuw was a Dutch East India Company ship that sank in 1613 off Saint Helena Island in the South Atlantic, reportedly after an explosion following an engagement with Portuguese carracks. The site has been of interest to maritime archaeologists for the porcelain and other cargo recovered from it, giving it historical significance beyond a typical wreck dive. It lies in deep water off the island's coastline near Jamestown, which has made full archaeological investigation difficult and limits routine recreational access. Given the depth and offshore location, this is not considered an easy or casual dive.
