About this site
Yonaguni Monument lies off the southern coast of Yonaguni Island, Japan's westernmost inhabited island, in the East China Sea near Taiwan. It is a submerged rock formation of large, angular terraces and flat planes discovered in the 1980s, which has drawn debate over whether it is a natural geological feature or partly shaped by human hands. The site sits close to shore and is reached by dive boats operating out of Yonaguni's harbor, with a maximum depth of around 7 metres that keeps it rated as a beginner dive. Its straight edges and stepped terraces are the main draw for divers, more than any marine life the area might hold.
