Garden Eel Point

Garden Eel Point is on the western tip of Menjangan Island, off the north-west coast of Bali. It has some of the healthiest corals around, was the first Bali site acclaimed internationally, and suits divers of all experience levels. The island is protected from the cold ocean currents, and a current of more than 1 knot is unusual.

The dive starts at the north-west tip and follows the wall south towards the channel between Bali and Menjangan. Cracks and breaks in the wall are full of reef fish. The wall runs from the top at 5 to 8 m down to 25 m, with a maximum of 35 m, where it becomes a white sand slope with a big gorgonian fan and longnose hawkfish. Climbing the slope you pass soft corals and a huge colony of garden eels that covers it from 20 m to where it flattens at 14 m.

To the south is a coral garden at 5 to 12 m with bigeye trevally, titan triggerfish, many clownfish and often a surprising number of scorpionfish, and the sea fans hold pygmy seahorses. Whitetip and blacktip reef sharks, dogtooth tuna, small schools of barracuda, turtles and napoleon wrasse are also seen.
