Gentle Winds is a reef dive on the north side of St Croix in the US Virgin Islands. It is named after a condo complex on the beach there, and it marks the start of a mile-long stretch of spur-and-groove reef. The maximum depth is about 18 m (60 ft).
The terrain is a series of large, thriving coral fingers separated by narrow sand chutes. They bottom out onto a sandy plain at 60 feet (18 m). The hard and soft corals are diverse and dense.
The layout and depth make Gentle Winds a good second dive and a useful training site for divers working on their navigation skills. It suits beginners.
Marine life is best found by looking closely. Scorpionfish, flatworms, lettuce sea slugs, lobsters and flying gurnards sit among the coral heads or lie camouflaged on the sand.
