About this site
General Store is a boat dive off the south side of Kauai, Hawaii, rated intermediate to advanced. Depths run from about 65 to 100 feet (20 to 30 m), with 90 feet (27 m) or more on the outside.
The site is a horseshoe shaped inlet with small lava tubes on either side. These give fish plenty of places to hide, and the inlet gives divers somewhere to duck out of the current. Currents can be rough, and the site is sometimes done as a drift.
The freighter Pele sank here in the late 1800s. Little of her remains: a boiler, some hull plates and a couple of anchors.

The name comes from the plentiful fish. You can see black coral, lemon butterflyfish, helmet conch, octopus and turtles, as well as schools of black triggerfish, milletseed and pennant butterflyfish, white tip reef sharks, spotted puffers and giant porcupinefish. The rare reticulated butterflyfish is extremely uncommon on Kauai but has been recorded here. Because it sits in deeper water, there is always a chance of larger animals passing through, and dolphins are often seen.
