Archer Key lies about 5.5 miles (8.9 kilometres) west of Key West, in the backcountry. It is not a reef in the traditional sense, and the water is very shallow, at 3 to 8 feet (0.9 to 2.4 metres).
The setting is calm and secluded, with mangrove ecosystems around the key. It is a beginner site that suits snorkelling and wildlife watching, and it can be reached by kayak or private boat.
