Cottrell Key, also called Cottrell Reef, is a backcountry site on the Gulf side, about 8 miles (13 kilometres) north-west of Key West. Shallow patch reefs and sponge beds lie here, surrounded by mangroves, in depths of 5 to 25 feet (1.5 to 7.6 metres).
It is a beginner site, and the shallow water makes it a place for backcountry snorkelling as much as for diving.
