Coquitos is a reef dive off Tulum, Mexico, reached by a boat trip that passes right in front of the Tulum ruins. It is named for the palm trees on the beach in front of the site, and it is part of the Mesoamerican reef.
The reef runs north to south, about 6 metres deep on top and 12 metres at the base of the coral. The coral structures are big and varied, with brain, cactus and giant star corals, gorgonians and some fine elkhorn. A few swim-throughs make good fun.
Angelfish, parrotfish, damselfish, gobies, blennies and butterflyfish are the regulars. Southern stingrays, turtles and even reef sharks show up now and then.
The site can only be dived when the sea is very calm. Visibility reaches 20 to 30 metres in the best conditions and falls to about 10 metres when it is rough.
