South Gorge is a shore dive on the southern side of the main headland at Point Lookout. Entry is through the beach and surf, and divers follow the bottom of the cliff, which forms an underwater wall, out to Whale Rock and then return. Depth is 5 to 15 m.
The wall carries hard and soft corals with tropical fish, nudibranchs and crustaceans. Bull rays, eagle rays, turtles, wobbegong sharks and leopard sharks pass along the sandy bottom, and manta rays are seen from November to April. Dolphins and rays are also seen passing through the area.
Features: a small cave called The Cathedral can be explored, and there is a blowhole at Whale Rock.
This is a dive for advanced divers only. Strong current combines with swell, because the site is exposed to large waves. Visibility ranges from 5 to 20 m. When strong northerly winds are up it is commonly used as a snorkel destination.
