Algoma

The Algoma was a Canadian Pacific steamship that wrecked on the rocks near Mott Island off Isle Royale in Lake Superior in 1885, in a storm that caused significant loss of life among passengers and crew. The wreck broke apart on the rocky shoreline and today lies scattered in shallow water, with sections of hull plating, machinery, and other debris visible among the rocks rather than an intact ship form. Depths at the site are shallow, generally under 10 metres, which makes it accessible, but the exposed, rocky nature of the site and Lake Superior's cold water and often rough conditions mean it still demands care. Visibility in Lake Superior is typically good, and divers come to this site mainly for the historical interest of one of Isle Royale's earlier and more tragic wrecks rather than for marine life, since the lake itself is fairly sparse in that regard.
