About this site
The Wreck (沈船) in Amakusa, Kumamoto Prefecture, is a boat dive for intermediate divers and above with a maximum depth of 25 m and fast current. It is rarely diveable, since current, waves and visibility all have to line up. The ship, a gravel carrier sunk as an artificial reef, is large enough to take about 20 minutes to circle and holds schools of cardinalfish, anthias and jacks. The highlight is amberjack and yellowtail attacking the schools of silver-stripe round herring that gather on it, with lionfish, chicken grunt, moray eels and striped beakfish also present.
