About this site
Atauro Island sits in the Wetar Strait north of Dili, the capital of Timor-Leste, and is ringed by steep volcanic drop-offs and reef slopes typical of the small island chains between the Banda and Timor Seas. Its waters are part of the broader Coral Triangle region, and the island itself is reached by boat from the Dili coast. Diving here includes sites over a sandy bottom reaching around 15 metres, rated a beginner dive. Manta rays are found in the area, and divers have also reported bumphead parrotfish and fusiliers.
