About this site
Vis Island lies off the coast of Split-Dalmatia County in Croatia, in the central Adriatic Sea, and is known for a number of World War II era aircraft wrecks in its surrounding waters tied to Allied air operations flown from the island. A B-17G Flying Fortress went down nearby during the war, and the wreck now rests at a maximum depth of around 70 metres, rated a technical dive. The island itself served as an Allied airbase during the war, which accounts for the concentration of aircraft wrecks in the surrounding waters, and this one in particular is reserved for divers equipped for its depth.
