About this site
Vis Island lies off the coast of Split-Dalmatia County in Croatia, in the central Adriatic Sea, and is known for a number of World War II era aircraft wrecks in its surrounding waters tied to Allied air operations flown from the island. A B-17G Flying Fortress went down nearby during the war, and the wreck now rests on the seabed, rated a technical dive over a bottom of wreckage. The island served as an Allied airbase during the war, which accounts for the concentration of aircraft wrecks in these waters. Divers on the wreck have reported Mediterranean rainbow wrasse, ornate wrasse, purple sea stars, and regal sea goddesses among the structure, though these sightings come from limited observation rather than extensive survey.
