About this site
The Bay of Pigs, known locally as Bahia de Cochinos, sits on the southern coast of Cuba in Matanzas Province, historically notable as the site of the 1961 invasion attempt. The bay's shoreline, particularly around the town of Playa Giron, has developed into a diving area known for steep drop-offs close to shore, where the shelf falls away into deep water not far from the coastline. Divers in this area typically enter from shore rather than by boat, given the proximity of deep water to the beach. Diving here reaches a maximum depth of around 25 metres and is rated as a beginner dive. Divers have also reported eagle rays passing through the area.
