About this site
Big Wall sits off Mnemba Island, in the conservation area of the Mnemba Atoll off Zanzibar's northeast coast, reached by boat from villages near Nungwi and Matemwe. As its name suggests, the site follows a wall bottom where the fringing reef drops toward deeper water, reaching down to around 70 metres and rated a technical dive. Barracuda, batfish, jacks and amberjack, Napoleon wrasse, and tuna are regularly encountered along the wall. Divers have also reported lobster, mantis shrimp, moray eels, octopus, reef sharks, snapper, stingrays and unicornfish here.
