About this site
The Blue Hole sits on the Red Sea coast a few kilometres north of Dahab, in Egypt's Sinai peninsula. It is a submarine sinkhole opening near shore, dropping to a maximum depth of around 100 metres over a reef bottom, and connecting to open water through an archway tunnel at around 56 metres. Visibility is generally great and current light, and the shallow rim area is easy to explore, with nudibranchs a regular find on the reef. Divers have also reported turtles, eagle rays, manta rays, whale sharks, hammerheads, oceanic whitetips, mola mola, octopus, and reef fish such as batfish, clownfish, lionfish, scorpionfish, parrotfish, trevally and tuna around the site. Beyond the shallow rim the site carries a serious reputation, rated an advanced dive because of the overhead environment at depth and the archway tunnel, and it has been linked to fatalities among divers who exceeded their limits.
