About this site
Butterfly Rock lies off Sri Lanka's eastern shoreline, in the area near Trincomalee on the island's Bay of Bengal side. The waters here are typically reached by boat from coastal towns along this stretch of coast. It is a beginner site with a maximum depth of around 12 metres, making it an easy dive over the rock formation. Divers have reported bigeye scad, bigeye trevally, blacktip trevally, golden trevally, tille trevally, and twospot snapper moving over the site, along with painted sweetlips, sixspot glidergobies, and nudibranchs among the rock's smaller life.
