About this site
Grande Island sits at the mouth of Subic Bay, near Olongapo on the west coast of Luzon in the Philippines, an area long dived by operators based out of Subic Bay's former naval station harbor. Canyons Reef here runs over a rocky bottom to a maximum depth of around 30 metres, rated an intermediate dive with medium current and generally good visibility. Strong currents are a known hazard at the site, and divers have also reported downwellings, upwellings, and the risk of being pulled deeper or into a blue water ascent, so current awareness matters here. The reef holds barracuda, batfish, grouper, octopus, scorpionfish, snapper, sweetlips, and tuna, with divers also reporting sightings of anthias, butterflyfish, frogfish, nudibranchs, trevally, and occasionally larger pelagics such as hammerhead, thresher shark, whale shark, and manta ray.
