About this site
Checkers lies in the waters off Maputo, the capital of Mozambique, on the country's southern Indian Ocean coast, and is typically reached by boat from operators based around the Maputo Bay region. It is a reef site with a maximum depth of around 12 metres, rated a beginner dive. Divers have reported bannerfish, butterflyfish, crocodilefish, moray eels, sea turtles, triggerfish, and stonefish here, with stonefish also noted as a hazard worth watching for on the sandy patches near the reef.
