About this site
El Hierro is the westernmost and youngest island of the Canary archipelago, built by volcanic activity and known for a steep underwater profile that drops quickly from the shoreline into deep water. El Rio sits along this coastline, in the channel area near La Restinga on the island's southern side, where the reef terrain reflects the island's volcanic origins. The site reaches a maximum depth of around 40 metres. These waters fall within the marine reserve established around El Hierro's southern coast, one of the reasons the area is protected for diving.
