About this site
One of three schooner-barges that left Pequaming in tow of the steamer P.H. Birckhead, all loaded with lumber for lower-lakes ports. They spent one day at shelter off Marquette before proceeding to Whitefish Point. As they tow rounded the point, towlines snapped, setting the barges loose. One schooner-barge went to anchor, with the crew being rescued by lifesavers, one schooner made sail and reached shelter. The Birckhead reached the Elma and passed another tow-line and headed for shelter near Grand Island, where the towline broke again and the Elma damaged her rudder, leaving her unable to make sail. The Elma finally went on the rocks off Miners Castle. One crewman was lost getting a line ashore, but eventually the remaining crew were able to scale the cliff and reach safety. Lies in about 13.1 m; sank 1895.
