About this site
The George was bound for Marquette with 1,330 tons of coal when it ran into a snowstorm in October 1893. The captain attemped to shelter behind Grand Island but as winds increased, the George was blown ashore off Pictured Rocks, 2 miles east of Miners Castle. The crew was able to use the yawl to reach safety. The vessel broke up near the shore, with the centerboard box, keelsons, and large sections of the hull remaining, from the edge of the rocks out to the mouth of the cove. Lies in about 4.6 m; sank 1893.
