About this site
Great Detached Reef sits at the far northern end of the Great Barrier Reef system, off the coast of Far North Queensland, well offshore in remote waters rarely reached by day boats from the mainland. Its position near the edge of the continental shelf places it among the outer reef structures accessible mainly by liveaboard expeditions running the far northern reef routes. The area lies close to the Coral Sea drop-off, well north of Lizard Island and the more commonly visited Cairns dive sites.
