Heian Maru

The Heian Maru lies in Chuuk Lagoon, one of the largest wrecks from Operation Hailstone in February 1944, when American carrier aircraft struck the Japanese fleet anchorage there. She was a Japanese submarine tender, around 150 metres long, and now rests on her side in the lagoon. Depths on the wreck run from around 12 metres near the top of the hull down to roughly 33 metres at the sea bed, making her accessible to a range of divers while still offering deeper penetration for those with wreck experience. Cargo holds still contain submarine parts, periscopes, and other equipment tied to her role supporting Japan's submarine fleet. Visibility in the lagoon is generally good, and the site is reached by boat from Weno.
