About this site
The I-169 was a Japanese submarine that sank in Chuuk Lagoon in Truk during World War II, not from Allied attack but from an accident while submerged during the raid of February 1944 that also destroyed much of the Japanese fleet anchored there. It lies broken in the waters off the Faichuk Islands near Fefan, and its hull is split into sections rather than resting intact. Because it lies deep and in a lagoon area away from the main wreck sites more commonly visited near Weno, it sees fewer divers than the famous Truk wrecks. Diving it is generally considered a task for experienced wreck divers given its depth and broken condition.
