About this site
HMS Dragon lies off the Calvados coast near Sword Beach in Normandy, France. She was a British-built cruiser transferred to the Polish Navy as ORP Dragon, and she was damaged by German shellfire and a human torpedo off the invasion beaches in July 1944. Rather than being repaired, she was deliberately scuttled as one of the blockships used to form the Gooseberry breakwater protecting the Mulberry harbour at Sword Beach. The wreck now rests broken up on the seabed in the shallow waters off Ouistreham, a site more valued for its D-Day history than for marine life or reef structure.
