About this site
The Inland Sea is a small lagoon at Dwejra on the western coast of Gozo, connected to the open Mediterranean by a natural tunnel cut through the rock. Divers enter from the enclosed lagoon and swim through the tunnel out to the open sea, where the coastline continues with cliffs and rocky formations. This part of Dwejra was long associated with the Azure Window, the natural arch that collapsed in 2017, and the tunnel remains a popular access point for diving the surrounding coast. The dive tops out at around 9 metres, rated beginner, with visibility generally described as great. Tuna are a regular sight through the tunnel, and divers have also reported barracuda, damselfish, grouper, jacks or amberjack, moray eels, nudibranchs, and octopus along the way. Given the swim-through nature of the tunnel, boat traffic overhead, narrow exit points, and tour boats passing above have all been flagged as things to be aware of.
