About this site

La Jolla Shores sits along the coast of San Diego, California, adjacent to the La Jolla Underwater Park and Ecological Reserve. The site is known for its sandy shore entry leading out to eelgrass beds and, further offshore, the head of the La Jolla submarine canyon. Leopard sharks are a reliable sighting in the shallows, and divers have also reported guitarfish, octopus, squid, pipefish, and nudibranchs on the sand and eelgrass. Maximum depth at the site is around 10.7 metres and it is rated a beginner dive, which along with the easy beach access is why local dive shops and classes use it so heavily. That said, divers have noted a long surface swim and a long walk across sand to reach the water, a steep wall to the south, and cold water that can be tiring for anyone not used to the walk and swim combination.
