About this site
Looe Key is a spur-and-groove coral reef in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, south of Big Pine Key, reached by boat from Ramrod Key or Big Pine Key. It sits over a reef bottom with a maximum depth of about 10.4 metres, keeping it a beginner-friendly dive across its sandy channels and finger-like coral ridges. Divers have reported a wide range of life here, including angelfish, butterflyfish, parrotfish, snapper, grouper, jacks, lobster, moray eels, garden eels, stingrays, eagle rays, nurse sharks, reef sharks, sea turtles, and even the occasional barracuda or dolphin. The site is noted as exposed, so surface conditions can be a factor depending on wind and swell. It remains one of the better known sites in the lower Keys reef tract, popular with both snorkelers and divers.
