About this site
Mala Warf sits off Lahaina on the west coast of Maui, at the ruins of an old commercial pier that was damaged by storms and never fully rebuilt. The collapsed pier structure now forms an artificial reef in shallow water close to shore, making it a popular and easy shore dive and also a common site for night dives. The maximum depth runs to about 11.4 metres, and it is rated a beginner dive over a wreck bottom. Divers have reported turtles resting among the pilings and rubble along with octopus, frogfish, scorpionfish, nudibranchs, eagle rays, barracuda, and even hammerhead sharks. Surface conditions need attention, since the site sits near an active boat launch, the entry is rocky, and surge can pick up depending on swell, so divers are advised to stay alert on the surface and mindful not to damage the surrounding coral reef.
