About this site
Black Rock is a lava outcrop off Kaanapali Beach on the west coast of Maui, fronting the resort area near Kaanapali and just north of Lahaina. The site is accessible right from the beach, with the rock formation extending into the water and forming the shoreline boundary between Kaanapali Beach and Kahekili Beach Park. It's a beginner dive over a rocky bottom to about 9.6 metres, with great visibility. Divers have reported cave-like conditions and overhangs along the rock, along with surge that is common along the wall and currents that can build into strong tidal swings, so conditions can shift even though the site suits newer divers, and there are no lifeguards on hand. Marine life reported here includes eagle rays, octopus, parrotfish, triggerfish, pufferfish, barracuda, nudibranchs, and even whales passing through.
