About this site

Molasses Reef sits within the Key Largo National Marine Sanctuary off the upper Florida Keys, marking one of the outer reef tracts reached by boat from Key Largo. It is a shallow spur and groove coral reef formation reaching a maximum depth of around 19.8 metres, rated a beginner dive with light current and great visibility. Divers regularly encounter angelfish, eagle rays, nurse sharks, parrotfish, reef sharks, sea turtles, snapper, and stingrays, and there have also been reports of barracuda, butterflyfish, grouper, lobster, and moray eels among the coral heads. The site is popular partly for its clear, calm conditions typical of the protected reef tract and for a small wreck section and anchor remains scattered among the coral formations. It suits beginners well while still offering enough variety in marine life to hold the interest of more experienced divers.
